In the span of a few years, smartphones technology is always changing drastically from one feature to another. It wasn’t long ago when punching PIN numbers were the method to unlock our phones; now the latest phone models only require our face to unlock.
Just as we thought there’s no other way to unlock our phone, the in-display fingerprint scanning technology is now taking the world by storm.
What is this new feature?
While Apple opted for Face ID, Vivo made the first commercial phone with the in-display fingerprint sensor. Examples of products with this feature is the Vivo X21 and Vivo V11.
The in-display fingerprint sensor is also created due to the popularity of bezel-less phones, as companies are trying to remove any components from the screen surface of smartphones. Now, these Vivo phones are truly bezel-less with the in-display fingerprint scanning.
How does it work?
The technology behind the in-display fingerprint sensor is the Synaptics’ Clear ID sensor that is supported only on OLED and AMOLED display.
When you touch your phone screen with a finger, the display lights up and illuminate the fingerprint. Then, it captures a high-res scan of the reflected light of the fingerprint through the OLED pixels. Users may also need to press the screen lightly so the sensor can differentiate between the valleys and ridges of each fingerprint.
What are the advantages?
Compared to the rear fingerprint scanners, the in-display sensors are more accessible and convenient. They also work for dry and wet fingers and don’t increase the thickness of the phone. The in-display fingerprint sensors generally also work twice as fast than unlocking face scanners.
This technology is still rather new, but Vivo has armed their phones with a robust anti-spoofing system that detects spoofed fingerprints.
The in-display fingerprint sensor technology is truly revolutionary. It won’t be a surprise if another new technology comes up, but until then, this new feature will be the current trend.
